Overview

The springs of the Acheron River – a narrow rocky point with rushing waters – frozen even in summer – are located in Glyki, a village 20 kilometers from the coastal Ammoudia between Preveza and Parga.

The Acheron is a river and its sources are numerous, while it also crosses the prefectures of Ioannina, Preveza and Thesprotia. Its name, most likely, comes from the word “achos” (=sorrow) and means “the river of sorrow”. On the other hand, based on the sources of Greek mythology, it is claimed that the Acheron was the river where Hermes delivered the souls of the dead to Charon, so that they would end up in Hades. Another assumption is that once there lived a dragon that cured the water, which was killed by Aidonatos or Aidoneas, who over time became Saint Donatos (i.e. the patron saint of the place).
